Vintage Hand Tinted Framed Photograph
This lovely vintage photo was taken and hand tinted by J.H. Allen of Nelson, BC. It is titled Kootenay Lake, BC.
Allen opened a photo-finishing business in 1919 which became Allen’s Art Shoppe at 505 Baker Street in Nelson. He ran it until his death in 1969 and was well known for his tinted photos of the Kootenays, which remain very popular. Touchstones Nelson has many of his images and devoted an exhibit to his work in 2011.
Titled and signed in pencil by Allen. Estimated date of work is 1920-1940.
Frame is original and is in excellent condition. There is a slight water stain on the lower right portion of the matting. Overall the colours of this photograph remain bright and it is a wonderful piece of history, full of character. A great piece to add to any collection, and is easily mixed into modern gallery walls for a bit of rustic charm.
